Spotlight on Sylvan Perlmutter

Sylvan Perlmutter has been a student at ScottSound Music for over five years. He has taken clarinet, violin and guitar lessons. Sylvan started music lessons with the clarinet when he was in the fifth grade and played in the Levine Academy Stallion Band for four years.

He is now  a sophomore at J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, TX. After becoming a very good clarinetist, he played violin for a few months and then decided to pick up guitar. Since taking guitar lessons with Scott Whitfield, his improvisational skills have flourished. He and Scott have prepared some great YouTube videos of Sylvan playing blues, jazz, pop and rock tunes on guitar. They are posted on the ScottSound YouTube account (ScottSoundMusic1) and he will be featured throughout the next few weeks.

We hope you enjoy listening to some great songs played by a great young guitar player. All of us at ScottSound Music are proud of Sylvan's hard work and musical accomplishments.

Music Theory Classes

An important part of learning to play any musical instrument is the understanding of music theory.  ScottSound Music offers a forty-five minute class each month on a specific aspect of basic music theory.  This helps students to understand and read musical patterns, even at early ages, thereby improving performance.

Classes are offered twice a month.  This will allow you to pick the class that best suits your schedule each month.
These classes are also available as a make up time when a student misses a lesson.  The dates of the classes will be included in the monthly newsletter,

The music theory class is a great addition to our students' musical education.  It is also a helpful way for a student to make up a missed lesson.

We look forward to seeing you at these classes to help you enjoy your playing even more.

Music Theory classes for February will be held Saturday,. February 11, at 1:00 p.m. and Monday, February 27, at 7:00 p.m. at ScottSound Music.

Scott's Practice Tips

How to count eighth notes "downbeats and upbeats" in your music.
Tap your foot on the downbeat of each count and say 1, 2, 3, 4 each time your foot taps the floor.

When learning to sub-divide and play eighth notes evenly, imagine the highest point that your foot comes up to, before it returns back down. That is where the "upbeat" is. If you have 2 eighth notes in the beat, that "upbeat" is the second eighth note within the beat.

Now count as you tap your foot and say "&" (and) when your foot comes up to that highest point. (You should now say 1 &, 2 &, 3 &, 4 &, for each measure.)

As you tap your foot you can see and feel where the "downbeats" and the "upbeats" are in the music. So now it is easy to know where all of the eighth notes fall and how fast to play them.

As you practice this technique make sure the "downbeats and upbeats" are evenly spaced.
